The Department, throught CALS, offers three undergraduate degrees:

  • Bachelor of Science - Natural Sciences
  • Bachelor of Science - Agricultural Sciences
  • Bachelor of Science - International Agriculture and Natural Resources

Students completing a plant pathology major under the Natural Sciences program earn a Bachelor of Science-Natural Sciences degree. The Natural Sciences program primarily emphasizes basic biology, chemistry, and physical sciences requisite for graduate study in plant pathology and related disciplines.

Students completing the major under the Agricultural Sciences program earn a Bachelor of Science-Agricultural Sciences degree. The Agricultural Sciences degree program stresses courses related to plant health, such as entomology, plant pathology, plant nutrition, soil science, and weed control.

Students completing the major under the International Agriculture and Natural Resources program earn a Bachelor of Science-International Agriculture and Natural Resources degree. The International Agriculture and Natural Resources program emphasizes international application of plant pathology.

In all curricula, students obtain additional training in related subject areas, such as bacteriology, biochemistry, genetics, mycology, and plant physiology.

Bachelor of Science-Natural Sciences Curriculum

The degree curriculum consists of general college requirements, general education requirements, degree program requirements and major requirements.

General Requirements:

  • Four years of University work or the equivalent;
  • A total of at least 124 credits and 248 grade points;
  • A 2.0 cumulative grade-point average;
  • Completion of a major of at least 15 credits in one department of the college or in courses designated by the major department.

Degree Requirements (effective July 1996):

  • Communication 3 cr from approved oral communication courses, 3 cr from approved written communication courses;
  • Economics or Ag Economics 3 cr of approved courses;
  • Ethnic Studies 3 cr of "e" courses;
  • Humanities, 6 cr of H L or Z courses;
  • Social Science, 3 cr of S or Z, but not Econ/AgEcon International Studies, 3 cr from among approved courses;
  • Math, through Math211 or Math221;
  • Physics, 8cr, Phys 103/104 or 201/202 or 207/208;
  • Chemistry, [Chem 103/104 and Chem 221 or Chem 223] OR [Chem 109/327], and [Chem 343, 344, 345] OR [Chem 341, 342];
  • Biology, Biology 151/152 and Bacteriology 303/304 and Genetics 466, OR Botany 130, Zoology 101/102 and Bacteriology 303/304 and Genetics 466, OR Biocore 301, 303, 323, 333 and two of Biocore 302, 304, 324.

And the Major Requirements:

  • all of PlPath 300, PlPath 332, Botany 500;
  • 8 cr of any PlPath course higher than PP300, Botany 300, 400, 401, or Ento 302;
  • 3 cr of PP699, Capstone experience to be determined with an advisor.

Note: Bacteriology 101/102 and Genetics 160 satisfy degree requirements but are NOT recommended for majors in Plant Pathology.
