Research Program
My research interests include the elucidation of species concepts
of wood-inhabiting basidiomycetes especially those in the genera
Armillaria and Laetiporus, which cause major root and heart rot
in forests world-wide. These studies encompass the use of characteristics
of several types including morphological, genetic, ecological,
and molecular to give a dependable species concept. A broad spectrum
biosystematic study of the genera and species of the wood inhabiting
basidiomycetes is also being persued as a long term program. As
a part of this program, wood-inhabiting fungi in Alaska and in
the subantarctic islands are being surveyed to determine and compare
the diversity and to establish baseline data for use in environmental
monitoring. Involvement in pest risk assessments of the importation
of raw wood (logs, wood chips, and wood packing material) into
North America has been another strong involvement for the past
10 years.
